Reviews of K & K Bass Max

Pete McGregor Music Bass Shop is sole New Zealand agent for K & K bass Pickups
Dealer inquiries welcome

K & K Bass Max
is a double bass transducer in sandwich design for "quick wedge-mount" in one bridge wing. Its sandwich design features a layered construction of 2 piezo crystals, one facing up and one down. This ensures an even transmission from the strings and from the body side of the bridge with all its frequencies.
Bass Max is located in vertical direction to the vibrations and therefore transmits in a high volume. We recommend Bass Max for musicians playing both arco and pizzicato styles, as it transmits a broader mid frequency range. This enables the musician to change his/her playing modes without having to adjust the amplifier.

The connection jack is held in a special attachment clamp to be mounted at the A and D strings between string-holder and bridge.

One Bass Max will evenly pick up the tone range of the double bass. A big plus is the Bass Max's superb compatibility with smaller Bass Combo Amps.

K & K Bass Master Rockabilly Plus
The Bass Master RB Plus for Rockabilly Bass is the first double bass transducer system designed specifically for Rockabilly and Slap Bass. It combines two transducers (the Bass Max and a fingerboard pickup) to create an integrated double bass pickup system that brings out the percussive and subtle fingerboard sounds, as well as strong and warm bass tones. Each Bass Master RB Plus can be fine-tuned via the separate bass and treble controls within the dual channel preamp, providing an infinite range of combinations for every player and any style of play.

The first component, the popular Bass Max, is positioned in the bridge wing. To make the Bass Max, we combine two transducers into a "sandwich" in order to maximize and enhance vibrations captured from the entire bridge. Only one Bass Max is necessary to provide an even signal from all four (or five) of the double bass' strings. Its strong midrange signal is ideal for cutting through the mix in loud Rockabilly situations, or providing a warm and supportive line for country bluegrass.

The fingerboard transducer's unique size and shape allows it to be precisely placed on your instrument. The preamp lets the player blend in just the right amount of slap, growl, and other fingerboard sounds to reach their audience. This allows the player to achieve the exact sound they desire.

The dual-channel preamp has internal gain, bass, and treble trim pots for each pickup, allowing impressive +/- 20dB tonal adjustments. External volume controls let you balance the volumes of the bridge and fingerboard transducers on the fly. A convenient belt clip is included with this compact preamplifier, which weighs a mere ten ounces with the battery installed. A six foot, high quality three conductor (1/4 inch stereo) cable is included to complete the package.

The Bass Master RB Plus includes an extra output in the preamp, enabling stereo sound if desired.

The Revolution® SOLO 11
We are proud to announce that the Revolution Solo Double Bass Pickup (pat.pend.) has undergone some significant changes. These changes have been made after listening to our dealers, customers and players opinions over the past two years. These changes include:

NEW - a custom piezo to meet our specifications. Our new piezo is both more powerful and more efficient than what was previously used. Our custom piezo now has drastically lowered impedance. This will virtually eliminate the need for pre-amps, as well as universal compatibility withmost amplifiers on the market. Our new piezo is also capable of a broader tonal range while sub harmonic frequencies have been significantly reduced..

NEW - upgrading the parts to fully shielded, pro audio quality pieces.

NEW - after-length dampener that can be used as an optional item that is simple to install within seconds. We have found some basses perform better amplified with some minor after-length dampening.

Our new pickup is a combination of everything you loved about the original Revolution Solo Double Bass Pickup and the features and performance that users wished for. We have been silently testing the new piezo for some time now, and end-user feedback has been extremely favorable

The Revolution Solo transducer is cleverly fitted in a piece of Spruce. Simply sand paper down to fit the unit on E string side of bridge

Schertler®
DYN-B
Double Bass transducer

(Swiss made)

The dream of every "acoustic thinking and feeling" bass player is a neutral-tone, faithful reproduction of his acoustic instrument, the quality he knows from the studio microphone, but without the problems of voiceover and feedback.
The SCHERTLER® DOUBLE BASS TRANSDUCER “DYN-B” is easily the most natural acoustic pickup on the market today, and through neutral amplification guarantees a truer reproduction of the double bass than ever thought possible.
The response, the dynamics, the entire feel of the sound, can no longer be distinguished from a purely acoustic performance.
A pre-condition for a perfect acoustic performance is a neutral amplification system - so, no need for an electric bass amplifier.
To control feedback tendencies there is an integrated phase inversion circuit within the transducer’s XLR connector (to suppress standing waves). In addition, the instrument resonance filter of the optional SCHERTLER®ACOUSTIC PREAMP “PRE-A” helps to counter any tendency of the double bass to resonate with the loudspeaker.

schertler dyn b
The Schertler Dyn-B ElectrodynamicTransducer
is not a Piezo
The use of the DYN-B bass transducer is extremely simple and safe. Special adhesive putty is provided to mount the acoustic pickup on the instrument body.
The XLR connector with integrated phase inverter is clamped between the strings next to the bridge.
The balanced signal uptake - via the XLR connector - and the low impedance reduce the risk of hum and radio frequency interference to a minimum, even with long cables. They also allow direct connection to a mixing desk or amplifier input, or via the ACOUSTIC PREAMP "PRE-A" for amplification devices with direct "Line-In" possibilities.
So it can be used direct to amplifier or recording desk or if desired can be combined with the Pre-11 below for full player control.
The addition of the PRE-A preamp is generally recommended for bass players, since this by itself provides a line out signal for further system components to perform whatever modulation is required.
